During the first week of February, TASK was once again one of the many agencies nationwide that participated in the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

As required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the PIT Count takes place across the U.S. on a given day, usually in the winter, to try to quantify the number of people who are unhoused. The survey also helps to shine a light on the factors contributing to homelessness and the challenges this community faces.

The PIT Count helps government agencies, service providers like TASK, community advocates and the public to develop a deeper understanding of the people experiencing homelessness and the work that needs to be done to end it. The results for New Jersey will be published in the fall of 2026.

The day began with a kick-off event at the Coordinated Entry Assessment System (CEAS) Center where TASK and other participants in the Mercer County Continuum of Care heard from Mercer County Executive Dan Benson and Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora on the importance of the survey.

Several members of TASK’s staff underwent training to be able to administer the survey and spent the day at our dining room and food truck sites speaking with dozens of people who spent the previous night unsheltered. Members of nonprofit partner One Simple Wish were once again on-hand this year to help administer the survey and distribute hygiene products to patrons who shared their experiences.

In addition to gathering the information needed by the government, we learned valuable information that will help to inform our programs and services going forward. As always, we are grateful to everyone who shared their experiences with us and to all of our partners in this important work.
